BACKGROUND
Biodiversity, indigenous knowledge (IK), and sustainable development are very closely linked. Indigenous knowledge has been noted to make a significant contribution to sustainable development of local communities, as it is seen as a set of perceptions, information, and behaviour that guide local community members to use the land and natural resources. The goal of managing indigenous knowledge is to provide the right information to the right people at the right time. Application of traditional knowledge has and will continue to immensely benefit the society at large.
 Hence, there is a need for preservation and conservation of traditional and indigenous knowledge culture resources for Sustainable Future. Simultaneously, it become equally significant that these cultural resources should get access to external world so that next generation come to know about the rich custom and traditions existed in India. It also focused the various methods of preservation of cultural resources, understating the copyrights, how to do basic research, writing skills and many more. For mapping & dissemination of Traditional and Indigenous knowledge, the ICT can play a major role. Thus the programme will highlight how ICT can be used in preservation and conservation of Traditional and Indigenous knowledge culture resources.
In the said background, the three days’ workshop will be conducted on March 15-17, 2017 at National Institute of Technology (NIT), Silchar.

OBJECTIVES
                The workshop main objectives of the programme is to introduce, train, motivate and enrich the knowledge of the young scholars of North East India which helps them to understand, study, document and safeguard the rich cultures of the region.
              The main aim of the workshop is to expose participants to the state-of-the art technology (ICT Tools) available to map, conserve & preserve the cultural resources of the North Eastern Region.  The select objectives of the workshop to:
1.       understand the management and preservation of traditional cultural knowledge
2.       means and ways to store the tacit and explicit knowledge
3.       use appropriate  ICT Tools to map, document & preserve the cultural resources
4.       share information used by indigenous people for national and cultural management
5.    implement programs to collect, preserve and disseminate indigenous and local traditional knowledge resources.
6.   communicate and increase the outreach and publicize the value, contribution, and importance of indigenous and local traditional knowledge to both non-indigenous and indigenous peoples.

PARTICIPATION
                The workshop is expected to draw professionals from a wide range of disciplines. Around 100 participants with mere knowledge and interest on cultural resource management will add value to them. This workshop will have great benefit for the following kind of audience:
·         PhD and Masters Students from Arts, Sociology and Culture, Science disciplines
·         ICT Implementers, Academicians, Practitioners and Policy makers
               The selected participants from North Eastern Region will be given TA/DA (limited to Bus / Sumo / sleeper class train fare) with free accommodation in the NIT Guest House on first cum first serve basis based on the backgound & profile of the participants.
                  Students, Researchers & Faculty members those who wants share their experience / case study in the workshop are requested to contact Dr. Kishor Satpathy of NIT Silchar.

Original practical papers, best practices & case studies are invited on the said topics only few selected papers will be allowed for presentation in the experience sharing session.

LOCATION
NIT Silchar is located on the Silchar - Hailakandi road at a distance of about 8 K.M. away from the railway station/bus stand. Silchar is linked to the rest of the country by road, rail and air. There are daily flights from Kolkata and Guwahati. Silchar is also well connected by road. Deluxe Buses run every day between Guwahati / Shillong / Aizwal / Agartala / Imphal and Silchar.

NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY SILCHAR
                The National Institute of Technology, Silchar (An Institute of National Importance) is one of the premier national level institutions for technical education in North-East India. The institute was established as a joint venture between Government of India and Government of Assam as Regional Engineering College, Silchar in 1967 with the objective of imparting quality engineering education, providing cosmopolitan outlook among students and fostering a spirit of National Integration. This institution has been transformed and upgraded to National Institute of Technology, Silchar with a Deemed University Status with effect from 28.06.2002. The institute has subsequently been made into a fully Government funded institution of India with the Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act 2007. NIT Silchar is situated on the banks of the river Barak and on a sprawling campus spread over 600 acres of land on the outskirts of Silchar. The landscape of NIT Silchar campus is beautiful with natural lakes and hillocks, surrounded by tea gardens.
                NIT Silchar is a fully residential Institution. The Institute provides courses at UG, PG and Ph.D. level for six Engineering branches namely Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics & Communication, Computer Science and Electronics & Instrumentation. The Institute also provides PG and Ph.D. degrees in Applied Physics, Applied Chemistry, Mathematics and MBA. The Institute encourages Research & Consultancy works that syncs with the global technical advancements, with special emphasis on the development of North Eastern Region. Various programmes are conducted in the Institute, including conferences, workshops, seminars, invited talks, etc. in collaboration with different academic institutions, R&D organizations and industries.

CENTRAL LIBRARY@NIT SILCHAR
                The Central Library which is the heart of the Institute was established in 1977. It provides one of the important academic services to the Institute. It is a well-equipped Library, centrally located with easy access and does provide right impetus for the intellectual growth of the students, teachers, research scholars & others around. Presently, the Library is a part of the LTT building & having around 95,000 collections of documents of both print & non print materials. The new library building is under construction.
                The Central Library with its modern collection of knowledge resources and innovative information services supports a complementary role for students, faculty, and the surrounding community in their intellectual pursuits. It is a hybrid library with the state-of-the-art technological applications. The Library holds knowledge resources predominantly related to Science and Technology, Social Sc & other allied subjects. The Library is now fully computerized with an integrated system connected to the Campus Network providing e-resource facility to the institutional community. The entire Library collection including the CD-ROM databases and the online databases are made available through Institute’s network. Users can access the online databases through Institute’s network. Library collection can also be searched through Web OPAC.
                The Library offers a range of information services to support the learning process set to the highest professional standards. The Library is holding membership of DELNET New Delhi; ACL (American Centre Library) Kolkata and British Council Library Kolkata for inter-library loan. National Institute of Technology Silchar Library is an active member of INDEST Consortium through which online full text journals can be accessed.
Recently, NIT Silchar has invested Rs. 44 crore to create a world-class, innovative, inviting and flexible library system to enhance campus learning, support research and to provide community outreach service having 90000 sq. ft. carpet area. For this purpose, Central Library, NIT Silchar has entered into a collaborative MOU with University Library & Mortenson Centre for International Library Programme of University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, USA on 6th June 2014 to create world class LIS facilities at NIT Silchar.

ABOUT INDIRA GANDHI NATIONAL CENTRE FOR THE ARTS
              The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, (IGNCA) is an autonomous Trust set up by the Government of India under the Ministry of Culture. IGNCA is envisioned as a national level institution. The arts are here understood to comprise the fields of creative and critical literature, written and oral; the visual arts, ranging from architecture, sculpture, painting and graphics to general material culture, photography and film; the performing arts of music, dance and theatre in their broadest connotation; and also in fairs, festivals and lifestyles that has an artistic dimension. The Centre focused its attention on India in the initial stage; subsequently, it started expanding its horizons to other civilizations and cultures. Through diverse programmes of research, publication, training, creative activities and performance, IGNCA seeks to appropriately place the arts within the context of the natural and human environment.
Kalanidhi Division of the IGNCA, as the name implies, is basically a repository of art and culture related research and reference material. The division has a reference library with a collection of more than 1,60,000 volumes; a cultural archives; a reprography unit and also a slide collection. The reprography unit has microfilms of 2,50,000 manuscripts on different subjects. There are more than 1,00,000 slides on archaeological sites, temples, monuments, performing arts etc. The cultural archives has personal collections of noted art historians like Ananda K. Coomaraswamy, photography collection of Raja Deen Dayal, Henri Cartier Bresson, and art related objects from the collections of certain prominent scholars and artists.
There are four other divisions in the IGNCA: Kalakosa which is primarily research and publication division; Janpada Sampada for the study of diverse living traditions; Kala Darsana for exhibition and presentation; and Sutradhara Division for administration and coordination. The IGNCA has a well-developed Media Unit for audio-visual documentation and film-making, as also a Cultural Informatics Laboratory for production of interactive multimedia CD-ROMS, DVDs and also for developing and maintaining a National Digital Data Bank on Culture

About TERI North-East

Since its foundation, the Centre has developed extensive expertise in harmonizing community aspirations for sustainable development and economic empowerment with a sustainable utilization of natural resources in the North-East. The Centre has made significant progress in the conservation of the rich biodiversity of the region. For the production of quality planting material, the Centre has set up a plant tissue culture laboratory that is committed to developing genotype specific micropropagation protocols.
